Healthy Eating Tip: More Reasons to Ditch the 80/20 Mindset

Greedy man eating burger

Every time I turn around there’s another expert, coach, or guru advocating for the 80/20 strategy. If you’re not familiar, their healthy eating tip is that you stick to “the plan” 80% of the time and then eat whatever you want and do whatever you please the other 20%. Somehow, this equates to an easier “lifestyle.”

I’ve talked about this at length before (and here as well) and offered a few reasons why I advocate for a “close to 100% as possible” model with the caveat that nobody is perfect.… Read the Rest

Our iTunes feed is fixed and all of our lost sessions are now restored, thankfully!

Today on the show, Sam Feltham from Smash the Fat is going to tell you how he ate 5000 calories a day for 21 days and gained practically no weight and actually decreased measurements. Sam did this as an experiment to prove that calories-in, calories-out is an unhelpful model – something I’ve also been preaching pretty hard.… Read the Rest

Fat Burning Workout Tip: Love Intensity Not Duration

female-sprinter

I always feel the need to mention the difference between losing weight and losing fat when I write articles like this because the “weight loss” mindset is so prevalent in our culture. In short, I don’t want you to lose weight, I want you to shred fat and I talked about this at length in The Ten Pound Problem.

This distinction is really important because the wrong types of exercise cause you to lose weight (which often means muscle) instead of just fat.… Read the Rest

The 10 Pound Problem

Training-Slide-0

If you had to choose between a weight loss coach and a fat loss coach, which one would you pick?

I know which one you’d search for! There’s over 400 million search results for the term “weight loss” on Google.  Less than 200 million for “fat loss.”

If you’ve never taken the time to scrutinize the difference, I’ll save you a few minutes: weight loss is frivolous.… Read the Rest

The 100 Calorie Snack Pack Lie

Young lady in dieting concept

Every time I talk about the fraud of “calories in, calories out” thinking I take a bunch of flak. There are people far and wide who just won’t let that sacred cow die. So I decided to drag out the last bastion of calorie counting thinking; the 100 calorie snack pack.

If you think health, weight loss, and fitness is all about calories, you’re going to hate this article.… Read the Rest

How Can I Lose Weight Without Counting Calories?

Screen Shot 2013-04-03 at 1.29.39 PM

“Losing weight is simple, it’s all about calories in versus calories out.” My high school friend was giving me a lesson on the law of thermodynamics. “I can eat whatever I want as long as I burn more than I take in,” he told me.

The conventional wisdom is that the law of thermodynamics governs all things weight loss. The theory treats the human body like a math equation: calories in minus calories out equals a gain or loss.… Read the Rest

Grading Shape Magazine’s “7 Fitness Conundrums, Solved”

salad

There’s no shortage of bad information floating around. A lot of it comes from magazines, some of it comes from doctors, and the rest comes from people who listen to magazines and doctors.

Shape.com (Shape Magazine’s online version) is a pretty popular health and fitness resource. More than 360,000 people like them on Facebook; not too shabby. So, when I came across their article, “7 Fitness Conundrums, Solved,” I was really hopeful (to be clear, it was a really, really, really small part of me that was hopeful) to read some good advice.… Read the Rest

Scientific American’s Dangerously Ignorant Article: “Most People Shouldn’t Eat Gluten-Free”

I get that some people are behind the curve, stuck helplessly within the confines of conventional wisdom. They listen to the government, love the MyPlate outline sold to them by the USDA, buy food products because they have a shiny American Heart Association sticker on them, and are pretty much all-things-mainstream.

I don’t have a huge problem with those people. They’re wrong, but everyone can’t be right about everything.… Read the Rest

Naked Juice Won’t Help You Look Good Naked

What’s most associated with health and fitness besides exercise? Fruits and vegetables. Anyone who wants to eat healthy automatically assumes it’s all about fruits and vegetables. Combine that with the current craze of “juicing” everything and you have people reaching for yummy juice products like Naked juice.

With flavors like Green Machine, Mighty Mango, and Pomegranate Acai they’ve got the juice craze on lockdown.… Read the Rest
